It depends! If you own AND live in your home, you are not required by local construction codes to have a gutter system. But, there is an odd exception for landlords.
If you RENT your home, it is required by Grand Rapids Property Maintenance Code and the 2021 International Property Maintenance Code that your gutters and roof be "sound, tight, and not have defects that admit rain."
And when it comes to gutters, the code specifies that "gutters and downspouts should be in good repair; all parts intact, properly attached, and directing water away from the building."
This means if you have gutters, they need to be working properly. If you don't have gutters, this part of the code actually doesn't apply to you.
If you are renting a home, that means it could potentially be less expensive to remove your existing gutter system than to repair and/or replace it to stay up to date with code. That's an interesting loophole.
Do I need a permit to have gutters installed on my home in grand rapids, MI?
No - gutters are considered a repair and improvement to your home, and do not require a permit to be installed in Grand Rapids.
